Daybreak taught me invaluable lessons:

  1. Overscoping Can Kill a Project – Ambition needs to be balanced with realistic execution.

  2. Player Clarity Is More Important Than Complexity – A great system isn’t great if players can’t understand it.

  3. Combat Design Needs a Core Identity – By shifting our perspective from an RPG to a puzzle strategy game, we found our unique combat flow.

While Daybreak didn’t end up as the game we first envisioned, it became a smarter, more engaging experience because we adapted to our constraints.

Introduction: The Evolution of Daybreak’s Design

As Lead game designer on Daybreak, this project was a rollercoaster of ambition, iteration, and adaptation. What started as an expansive RPG concept evolved through constant refinement, driven by the realities of development constraints and the need to maintain player clarity.

One of our biggest challenges was designing an active turn-based combat system that felt fresh and strategic while maintaining the depth of an RPG. A key pillar of our combat was the Elemental Discharge System, a mechanic designed to reward planning and tactical execution. However, realizing this vision required a complete rework of our approach to game pacing, player agency, and mechanical depth.

This reflection will dive deep into the Discharge System, the core combat experience, and the challenges of production that forced us to rethink and refine our original ideas.

The Discharge System – Mechanics, Strategy, and Player Experience

The high-level game design theory behind the Discharge System was influenced by Mark Brown’s combat depth principles—particularly the idea that good combat systems should involve:

  1. Meaningful Player Choice: Each action should have clear consequences.

  2. Emergent Complexity: Simple mechanics should combine into deep interactions.

  3. Tension and Risk Management: Players should constantly evaluate trade-offs

The Discharge System embodied all three by making elemental stacking a shared risk-reward mechanic between the player and enemies.

How the Discharge System Worked(In Order)

  • Elemental Attacks Generate Discharge Stacks:

    • Each enemy had an elemental affinity (e.g., Fire, Water, Grass).

    • When attacked with an elemental skill, they gained a stack of their own element.

    • Example: Hitting a fire-aligned enemy with a basic attack gave them 1 Fire Discharge Stack.

  • Threshold Triggers an Elemental Burst:

    • If an enemy’s stack reached 2, a Discharge Effect activated.

    • This effect benefited both the player and the enemy, forcing the player to consider whether the trade-off was worth it.

  • Discharge Effect Examples:

    • Fire Discharge: Boosts attack power for all combatants but increases damage taken.

    • Water Discharge: Heals the lowest HP ally and enemy.

    • Grass Discharge: Increases critical hit chance for everyone.

  • Stacking Discharges Created Chain Reactions:

    • If multiple enemies had different Discharge stacks, their effects combined in unique ways.

    • Players could manipulate turn order to trigger certain Discharges first, allowing for puzzle-like combat optimization.

The Player’s Experience: Decision-Making in Combat

The player’s choices revolved around balancing damage output, risk management, and battlefield control.

Aggressive Playstyle:

  • Players could rush elemental stacks, triggering chain reactions that dealt massive damage but also buffed enemies.

  • This rewarded glass cannon strategies, where speed and power were prioritized over safety.

Defensive Playstyle:

  • Players could avoid triggering Discharges, focusing on single-element attacks and controlling mana expenditure.

  • This approach required long-term resource management, ideal for players who preferred slower, strategic combat.

Hybrid Playstyle:

  • By manipulating turn order, players could force enemies into unfavorable Discharge triggers while maintaining their own buffs.

  • This was the optimal way to play, encouraging mastery over the tempo of battle.

Combat System – Blending RPG Depth with Puzzle-Like Strategy

The Reverse Mana System

Unlike traditional RPGs where mana is spent freely, Daybreak used a Reverse Mana System that penalized players for hoarding resources.

  • Basic Attacks Generated Mana:

    • Players could not deal direct damage with basic attacks.

    • Instead, they built up mana, which was then spent on skills that activated elemental effects.

  • Too Much Mana = Penalty:

    • If a player held onto too much mana without spending it, they suffered negative status effects (e.g., slowed actions, increased damage taken).

    • This mechanic forced players to engage actively in combat, preventing passive or overly defensive playstyles.

 

This system was built on positive reinforcement design, encouraging players to make constant tactical decisions rather than passively cycling through attack animations.

Combat Flow and Player Experience

Each battle played out in three key phases:

  1. Early Turns – Setting Up Discharges:

    • Players built mana and applied initial elemental stacks to enemies.

    • Decision-making here revolved around choosing which Discharges to trigger first.

  2. Mid-Battle – Reaction Chains and Adaptation:

    • The battlefield became chaotic as Discharge effects activated for both sides.

    • Players had to adapt their strategy on the fly, either capitalizing on buffs or mitigating risks.

  3. Endgame – Execution of Strategy:

    • Players planned the final blows, using ultimate skills unlocked through mana accumulation.

    • The best players would manipulate the final Discharges to end the fight in their favor.

This structure kept combat engaging from start to finish, ensuring that even basic encounters felt like mini-strategy puzzles rather than repetitive grind-fests.

Overall Progress

Early Development – Overscoping and Course Correction

Our biggest mistake was overscoping. The original vision included:

  • Eight elemental interactions instead of five.

  • A deep progression system that customized Discharge effects.

  • Environmental puzzle mechanics tied to combat.

It quickly became clear that these features were beyond our team’s capacity. Realizing this too late set development back significantly, as we had to retrofit a more focused design into a half-built system.

Mid-Production – Refining the Core Loop

By the middle of development, we narrowed our scope, focusing on:

  1. Five Elements Instead of Eight – Simplifying balance and depth.

  2. Three Core Playstyles – Aggressive, Defensive, and Hybrid, ensuring variety.

  3. Streamlined Discharge Effects – Keeping only the most engaging interactions.

This was a painful but necessary pivot that ultimately saved the game from development hell.

Finalization – Tuning for Clarity and Feel

By the end, our focus was player clarity and UX:

  • Tutorialized Combat Scenarios – Ensuring players understood how to manipulate Discharges.

  • Combat Feel Polish – Adjusting turn speeds, animations, and UI indicators to enhance the sense of control and impact.

  • Balancing Risk vs. Reward – Tweaking mana penalties and elemental effects to keep fights engaging.
